Although the calendar says autumn has arrived, Greece has continued to experience summer-like conditions with high temperatures, dry skies, and strong northern winds across the Aegean. But forecasts suggest that the weather pattern may change dramatically by the end of the week, bringing the first significant storm of the season.
According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), Tuesday remains mostly clear with only a few clouds expected in the Ionian Sea, western mainland, and Crete. Some afternoon showers are possible over Crete’s mountains. Temperatures will stay high, reaching 30°C in central and northern regions, 31°C in the south, and up to 32°C in western Greece. In the Aegean, values will hover around 28–30°C. Winds will vary, with light conditions in the Ionian turning to northwest breezes, while in the Aegean, northerlies of 3–5 Beaufort will persist.
In Athens, skies will remain clear with highs around 31°C and light winds, occasionally reaching 5 Beaufort in the east. Thessaloniki will also enjoy sunny weather with highs near 28°C and light, variable breezes.
A Shift on the Horizon
Farmers and residents alike have been concerned about the prolonged heat, dry conditions, and lack of rain. However, meteorologists see signs of an atmospheric shift that could bring the first noteworthy autumn storm.
Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis highlighted the influence of a “Rex block,” a circulation pattern first identified by Daniel Rex. This rare combination of a high-pressure system paired with a low-pressure system can fuel storm development, especially when combined with the still-warm waters of the Mediterranean. Early indications suggest this effect may be felt in Greece from Sunday into the new week.
At the same time, meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas pointed to storm system “Alessio,” the first named storm of the 2025–26 season, which is already affecting Italy with strong winds and thunderstorms. He clarified that Alessio will not directly impact Greece, but the upcoming weekend may still bring unsettled conditions as a new disturbance approaches.
