Greece is set for several days of extreme weather as a combination of searing heat in the west and powerful winds in the east creates challenging conditions nationwide.
According to forecasts, temperatures have already surpassed 40°C in multiple areas since Monday, with western regions such as the Peloponnese expected to reach 41–42°C today, Tuesday. Elsewhere, much of the country will remain in the high 30s, with slightly cooler conditions on the islands of the Cyclades, Sporades, and northern Crete, where temperatures will stay below 32°C.
Strong northern winds—known locally as meltemi—will dominate the Aegean, particularly in the Northern Cyclades, southern Evia, Attica, and the Northern Aegean, where speeds could briefly reach 8 Beaufort. The winds are expected to persist until Saturday, easing slightly at night.
Athens will see sunny skies with temperatures between 26–37°C and gusts up to 8 Beaufort in eastern districts. Thessaloniki will remain clear and warm, with highs around 36°C and lighter winds in the Thermaic Gulf.
Conditions are expected to moderate from Wednesday, with temperatures dipping slightly in the east and north, and a further cooldown arriving on Thursday. By the August 15 holiday, forecasters predict near-normal summer temperatures.
Monday’s peak readings included 42°C in Skala Messinias, 41.3°C at the Pineios Dam in Ilia, and just over 41°C in parts of Laconia and Achaia.
