Greece Braces for Successive Storms and Heavy Rain

A series of severe weather fronts are expected to sweep across Greece in mid to late November, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds and a sharp turn to winter conditions, according to meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis

Greece is expected to experience a sharp shift to winter conditions in the coming days, with a series of successive storms forecast to affect the country throughout the third ten-day period of November. Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis warned that recent simulations from the global forecasting system “Hercules” show a strong trend toward intense and persistent bad weather.

While the exact evolution of these systems remains uncertain, Marousakis noted that the pattern is significant enough to warrant close monitoring in the days ahead.

Stormy Days Ahead

According to forecasts, successive waves of heavy rainfall and storms will impact Greece, beginning late Friday. A new low-pressure system moving in from Italy is expected to first hit western regions before spreading eastward over the weekend.

Crete and the southern islands are expected to see particularly intense weather, with sporadic thunderstorms and locally heavy rain. Northern winds in the Aegean could reach up to 7 Beaufort, gradually easing by evening.

Temperatures will remain relatively mild for early November — between 16°C and 22°C across much of the mainland and up to 24°C in the Dodecanese — but are expected to drop slightly as the storms progress.

Regional Forecasts

  • Northern Greece (Macedonia, Thrace): Overcast skies with local showers, especially in eastern areas. Temperatures up to 18°C.
  • Western Greece (Ionian Islands, Epirus, Peloponnese): Cloudy periods with light rain early on, turning heavier by Friday night with possible thunderstorms.
  • Central and Eastern Greece (Thessaly, Evia, Attica): Cloudy with occasional showers, more frequent in coastal and island areas.
  • Aegean Islands and Crete: Sporadic thunderstorms, particularly in Crete and the southern Cyclades.

Weekend Outlook

By Saturday, rain and storms will intensify in western and northern Greece, gradually moving east. Fog and low visibility are expected in inland areas during morning and evening hours. Southerly winds will prevail, reaching 6 Beaufort in parts of the Ionian Sea.

On Sunday, unsettled conditions will persist, especially in western and northern regions, while temperatures will climb slightly, reaching up to 24°C in southern islands.

Meteorologists emphasize that forecasts remain under review as the country prepares for a prolonged spell of unstable and potentially hazardous weather.
