A brutal crime has shocked Glyfada, a southern suburb of Athens, where an elderly man was allegedly murdered by his own son.
The case came to light after a local resident called the Emergency Response Center to report a domestic incident involving a person said to be suffering from psychological problems. Police officers who arrived at the scene discovered the body of an 80-year-old man in the trunk of a car belonging to the victim. The suspect, the victim’s 46-year-old son, was present at the scene.
According to authorities, the elderly man had sustained fatal injuries caused by a sharp object and was already dead when officers arrived. A knife believed to have been used in the attack was found nearby and confiscated.
Investigators say the suspect has a long history of serious psychological issues and is no stranger to law enforcement. In 2014, he was arrested for the fatal stabbing of his 59-year-old mother. He was subsequently remanded in custody and later sentenced to 16 years in prison by order of the 2nd Special Investigating Judge of Athens.
In April 2018, he was released under restrictive conditions by order of the Piraeus Prosecutor’s Office. These included mandatory residence at his father’s home in Upper Glyfada and a requirement to report to the local police station on the 1st and 16th of each month. Police records indicate that he had been complying with these terms, with his most recent appearance recorded on January 16.
The investigation into the latest killing is ongoing, as authorities work to piece together the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
