Greece is facing a high risk of wildfires on Friday, Aug. 21, with numerous regions placed under the country’s Category 3 fire danger designation.
The Fire Danger Forecast Map classifies Category 3 as high fire risk, requiring increased vigilance, particularly in areas experiencing high temperatures and strong winds.
Areas under high fire risk
The Category 3 designation applies to:
- Attica and Kythira
- Boeotia, Evia and Skyros
- Phthiotis, Phocis, Aetolia-Acarnania, Thesprotia, Preveza and Arta
- Argolis, Corinthia, Elis, Messenia and Laconia
- Cephalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos
- The Sporades and islands of the northeastern Aegean
- Crete, the Cyclades and the Dodecanese
- Areas of Magnesia, Achaia, Arcadia and Evros
Authorities urge caution
The high-risk designation comes amid conditions that can favor the rapid spread of fires, particularly where high temperatures coincide with strong winds.
