Greece Marks World Mental Health Day with Events in Marousi

Athenians are invited to join workshops, discussions, and VR experiences as part of mental health awareness efforts on Oct. 10.

Marking World Mental Health Day on October 10, Greece’s Association for Regional Development and Mental Health (EPAPSY) is hosting a public event and discussion on mental health at PNOES Ath in Marousi.

Titled “Talking About Our Mental Health”, the event aims to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and foster empathy and understanding around mental well-being.

The program includes the VR Experience “Stepping into Another’s Shoes,” which uses virtual reality to simulate mental health disorders and promote empathy; an Escape Room challenge titled “Escape from Stereotypes” and creative workshops such as painting and collage to encourage free expression.

A highlight of the day is an open discussion (19:00–20:00) on “Mental Health without Stigma: What Can We Change?” featuring mental health professionals and individuals with lived experiences. Visitors will also find the “Stigma Box – Acceptance Box” installation at the venue entrance, inviting reflections on personal biases and acceptance.

On the same day, information kiosks will operate from noon to 16:00 in the Athens suburbs of Heraklion (outside the ISAP train station), Kifissia (at the Mela Mall), Acharnes (Menidi Square), and Marousi (outside the ISAP train station), offering interactive materials, games, and informative content on mental health.

Founded in 1988, EPAPSY has been a pioneer in promoting mental health awareness, supporting community-based care, and making mental health services accessible across Greece.

Greece to Set Up National Association of Psychologists

Meanwhile, in related developments, Attica Region authorities have approved the creation of the Panhellenic Association of Psychologists, a new professional body that seeks to strengthen ethical standards, safeguard professional rights, and advance mental health policy nationwide.

The association also aims to combat misinformation and unlicensed “pseudo-therapies” by promoting certification for psychotherapy professionals. Its plans include organizing scientific conferences and forming collaborations with international organizations. The interim board, chaired by Vasso Karagianni, includes 11 members. Licensed psychology graduates are eligible to join. Initially based in Athens, the association plans to establish regional branches across Greece.

* The EPAPSY event takes place on Friday, October 10, from 17:00 to 20:00, at PNOES Ath, Marousi. All activities are free of charge.
