Greece Shifts ID Copies to Fully Digital Format

The digital document may also be saved as a PDF file, retaining full legal validity as an official ID photocopy.

Greece’s Ministry of Digital Governance is rolling out significant changes to the way photocopies of national ID cards are issued and used, shifting the entire process into the digital realm. Under the new system, citizen transactions with private entities—such as banks—that require an ID copy will be conducted exclusively through digital services.

According to the ministry, both the submission and issuance of ID photocopies for use in private-sector transactions will now take place solely through online tools.

A dedicated electronic application within the government’s unified digital portal (gov.gr) will be used to create the digital ID copy. Access to this application will be restricted to authorized staff of the organization handling the citizen’s request.

Before a digital copy is issued, the system will verify the accuracy and validity of the citizen’s ID card through direct interoperability with the Hellenic Police’s Identity Card Registry.

The digital copy will include the following elements of the official Greek ID card:
• ID card number
• Full name in Greek and Latin characters
• Father’s name in Greek and Latin characters
• Mother’s name in Greek characters
• Date of birth
• Place of birth
• Date and authority of issuance
• Photograph of the holder

All information will be retrieved directly from the Identity Card Registry via the Interoperability Center of the General Secretariat for Information Systems and Digital Governance.

The digital document may also be saved as a PDF file, retaining full legal validity as an official ID photocopy.
