Greece is preparing to deploy “smart” traffic cameras across the country, with initial installations expected by the end of 2025 and broader implementation throughout 2026. The cameras are designed to notify drivers immediately of any violations, allowing them to contest fines electronically.
Speaking on the NEWSROOM program of ERTnews, Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou explained that the tender process for the camera system is underway and currently in the objection phase. The competitive bidding process for the cameras themselves is set to begin in the coming days, and authorities have already identified high-risk locations for installation.
Currently, 17 cameras operate on the Attiki Odos highway and 12 lanes managed by OASA, though these function under the existing traffic monitoring system. Out of the 2,500 cameras planned under the national initiative, 388 in the Attica region are expected to be installed first, as the tender for these units opened earlier.
“By the end of this year, the first cameras will be installed, with full deployment scheduled for 2026,” Papastergiou said. “Drivers will receive immediate notifications in their accounts when violations are detected and can file electronic objections.”
The minister also discussed the Kids Wallet initiative, which enforces age verification for minors purchasing tobacco and alcohol. Three digital platforms are being developed to verify age at private events, sales points, and through digital wallets and IDs. Sales using the Kids Wallet system are expected to begin at the end of October.
On vehicle registration, Papastergiou noted that a digital vehicle registry is being prepared. The ministry has already cross-checked insured vehicles and those with unpaid circulation fees. Initial notifications have been sent via email, with fewer than 1,000 letters mailed to vehicle owners. No fines are currently being issued, but penalties will be applied after a second review in November, conducted by Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).
