Greece is preparing to introduce a significantly stricter framework on gun ownership, with official announcements scheduled for Thursday, according to Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis. Speaking on Greek television, the minister confirmed that the new measures will be presented during his upcoming visit to Crete.
The reforms come amid increased government attention on incidents involving illegal firearms, prompting a broader review of policing and legislation. Chrisochoidis stated that the updated laws will include tougher regulations as well as the creation of new police services dedicated to addressing issues linked to gun possession.
The minister also referred to the area of Vorizia in Crete, noting that police presence will remain strong. He emphasized that upcoming operations will focus on families or groups believed to possess weapons, as part of a targeted effort to curb illegal gun activity.
“Society as a whole is not delinquent,” Chrisochoidis said. “A certain percentage is. We need to identify, investigate, and dismantle these groups. This is our objective, and this is the direction we are moving toward.”
