Greece is moving forward with a major recruitment drive in its national health system, Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistokleous announced. The plan includes 5,000 new permanent positions, alongside 3,000 temporary roles opening at the end of February.
Speaking to Skai TV, Themistokleous emphasized that the permanent positions will primarily be filled by existing temporary staff, whose contracts are routinely renewed. He noted that the health system currently employs more doctors and nurses than ever before, with some hospitals, particularly in the Athens region, now fully staffed in terms of official positions.
The recruitment push comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen hospital services nationwide. Themistokleous encouraged nurses in major urban centers to apply, assuring that all qualified applicants will be hired.
In addition to staffing updates, Themistokleous addressed a recent incident at Chios Hospital, where 23 people were hospitalized following a tragic event, with three patients currently in intensive care. He praised the hospital staff and emergency responders for their swift action.
The Deputy Minister also clarified concerns about unauthorized NGO presence at Chios Hospital, noting that hospital entry requires formal permission to protect patient safety. The individuals were promptly identified, removed, and authorities notified.
