Greece: Two Romanians Arrested for Espionage in Salamis

During an inspection conducted by a Coast Guard patrol vessel, it was discovered that the two individuals possessed photographic material of the Salamis Naval Fort.

Greek authorities on the island of Salamis apprehended two Romanian nationals on suspicion of espionage after they were spotted photographing the naval base from their boat, on the afternoon of Monday, 22 Sept.

The Salamis Port Authority received a report about a professional tourist vessel flying the Greek flag, carrying two foreign passengers, navigating within the channel of the naval base. The vessel was intercepted by a Greek Navy patrol boat.

During an inspection conducted by the crew of a Coast Guard patrol vessel, it was discovered that the two individuals, aged 22 and 52, possessed photographic material of the Salamis Naval Fort on their mobile devices.

The suspects were taken to the Central Port Authority of Piraeus, where they were formally arrested for violating Article 148 of the Penal Code (Espionage).

Authorities also confiscated three mobile phones, 4,700 euros, and 400 U.S. dollars. The tourist vessel was escorted to Salamis’ main port Paloukia, on the eastern side of the island, for a thorough inspection of its maritime documentation.
