A shocking case of fraud and concealment has emerged in central Greece, where a woman buried her elderly mother in order to keep collecting her pension and disability allowance.
Police revealed that the body of a 90-year-old woman was found in a makeshift grave inside an abandoned stable in a village in the region of Boeotia. The burial was carried out by her 62-year-old daughter, who serves as the director of a public service office in the nearby town of Oinofyta.
According to investigators, the daughter admitted that her mother had died in 2023 of natural causes. Facing financial difficulties, she decided not to report the death and instead hired a foreign worker to help her secretly bury the body.
“She was forced to admit that after her mother died of pathological causes, she buried her with the help of a man whose details she refused to provide,” said police spokeswoman Konstantia Dimoglidou in comments to Greek media.
Suspicion grew after neighbors noticed that the elderly woman had not been seen for years. When asked, the daughter claimed her mother was either staying with relatives or living in a care facility. On at least one occasion, she even presented another woman as her mother in an attempt to cover up the truth.
Authorities acted after receiving an anonymous tip, which led prosecutors to order an investigation. When officers visited the woman’s home, she initially tried to postpone their search and later attempted to deceive them by presenting another elderly woman as her mother.
The daughter now faces multiple charges, including fraud, false testimony, failure to report a death, and negligent homicide. She has been referred to prosecutorial authorities as the investigation continues.
