The Hellenic Police have issued a public warning over the increased risk of serious road accidents linked to vehicles passing through farmer protest blockades, responding to claims that police actions are responsible for traffic disruption on Greece’s national road network.
In an official statement released on Monday, police authorities stressed that traffic diversions imposed during the ongoing agricultural protests are necessary measures taken strictly in the interest of public safety. According to the police, the presence of tractors, fixed or moving obstacles, and people standing on roadways creates objectively dangerous traffic conditions.
The police underlined that allowing vehicles to pass through such areas significantly raises the risk of severe accidents. For this reason, rerouting traffic is described as a safety necessity rather than a discretionary choice.
“These measures are taken to prevent danger and protect human life,” the statement said, noting that decisions are based on documented risk assessments and the existing legal framework, not on assurances or declarations of good intentions.
Safety concerns for all road users
The police emphasized that the measures aim not only to protect drivers and passengers, but also the protesting farmers themselves. Demonstrators often move on foot in areas designed for fast-moving traffic, increasing the likelihood of accidents if vehicles are allowed to circulate normally.
Authorities also rejected accusations that police decisions worsen the situation on highways, reiterating that they are obligated to act whenever extraordinary obstacles or people are present on the road.
“The passage of vehicles under these conditions entails an increased risk of a serious traffic accident,” the police said, adding that maintaining traffic controls is essential to avoiding harm and ensuring public safety.
