Greek Teen Recovering After Life-Saving Liver Transplant

Dimitris, 15, is out of intensive care and responsive, days after undergoing a 10-hour liver transplant in Italy following heatstroke-induced liver failure. Doctors say his recovery is progressing well

A 15-year-old Greek boy named Dimitris has been successfully extubated and is now conscious and communicative following a life-saving liver transplant in Italy, according to a statement issued Monday by Le Molinette Hospital in Turin.

The teenager had been rushed to the transplant center last Thursday after suffering heatstroke, which led to acute liver failure. Surgeons acted swiftly, performing a complex 10-hour transplant operation that doctors say prevented an otherwise fatal outcome.

Rapid Recovery of Transplanted Organ

Italian medical experts reported that the newly transplanted liver is functioning well and that its recovery has been “particularly fast.” Dimitris’ improved condition allowed him to be moved from the Intensive Care Unit to the hospital’s Semi-Intensive Care Unit within days.

“The transplant successfully prevented the patient’s death from liver failure,” said Professor Renato Romagnoli, who led the medical team during the surgery.

He added that neurological function is also gradually returning, and the boy is showing signs of steady, encouraging recovery.
