Half of Athens Metro Line 3 Out During Peak Afternoon Period

The heavily-used underground line connects greater Athens-Piraeus with the international airport

Commuters using the Athens Metro’s Line 3 were in for a disappointing surprise on Wednesday afternoon, as the service only extended from Dimotiko Theatro in Piraeus to the Ethniki Amyna station outside the defense ministry. Service to stations extending to the Athens International Airport was interrupted, with the fixed rail operator, STASY, citing a problem in the electrical system between the Holargos and Doukissis Plakentias stations.

The very negative development comes as an ongoing taxi strike is underway in the greater Athens-Piraeus region.

The metro operator said the blame for the malfunction lies with the power grid operator.

Metro Line 3 is the busiest of the area’s urban rail lines.
