Heatwave to Persist Over the Weekend in Greece

Greece braces for another sweltering weekend as the heatwave continues, with temperatures reaching up to 44°C in parts of the country

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has updated its emergency weather bulletin, warning that the ongoing heatwave will continue through the weekend. Extremely high temperatures are forecast to persist on Saturday and Sunday, before gradually easing across the country on Monday, July 28.

Saturday’s Scorching Forecast

Saturday is expected to bring peak heat conditions, with temperatures soaring:

  • Mainland Greece: 40–42°C, and up to 43–44°C in the west
  • Athens: 40–41°C
  • Thessaloniki: 38–39°C
  • Eastern Aegean Islands & Dodecanese: 38–40°C
  • Ionian Islands: 38–40°C
  • Southern Crete: 39–41°C

Strong northern winds of 6–7 on the Beaufort scale will affect the Aegean and eastern regions on Friday afternoon and throughout Saturday.

Sunday Still Hot but Signs of Change

Sunday will remain hot, particularly in eastern and mainland regions:

  • Western mainland: Up to 38°C
  • Eastern mainland: Up to 40–41°C
  • Athens: 39–40°C
  • Thessaloniki: 38–39°C
  • Eastern Aegean & Dodecanese: 37–39°C
  • Ionian Islands: Around 35°C
  • Crete: Up to 37°C

Relief is expected on Monday, July 28, with a gradual drop in temperatures, especially in the eastern parts of the country. However, nighttime temperatures will remain high, hovering around 28–29°C in urban areas.
