The 53-year-old man who stabbed his estranged wife on Wednesday afternoon has confessed to the killing, claiming that he had lost control and acted “in the heat of the moment” while angry. Authorities, however, believe the attack was a premeditated deadly ambush.
According to police, the suspect waited for the right moment, knowing that his wife would return home for their daughter’s birthday, and then attacked her by surprise with a knife.
According to the forensic examination, the 44-year-old was stabbed in the neck and trachea.
After killing his wife, he wounded himself with a knife and drank a corrosive liquid in an apparent attempt to take his own life.
The suspect is being treated under guard at the hospital in Komotini and is expected to appear before a prosecutor facing a charge of intentional homicide.
For years, the woman had lived through what she described as a nightmare at the hands of her estranged husband. She had an appointment with her lawyer that day to file for divorce.
