Authorities in Athens uncovered an illegal animal farm operating inside a residential building, removing dozens of animals kept in unsanitary conditions on a rooftop in the city center.
The discovery was made in the Ambelokipi district following a complaint about the illegal breeding of farm animals inside an apartment building. Police and municipal services quickly intervened after a prosecutor ordered immediate action.
Officers inspecting the building found a makeshift livestock setup in a shared rooftop area. Inside, animals were being kept in poor hygiene conditions.
Authorities identified and removed 31 chickens, 10 birds of various species, as well as 10 adult goats and three young goats. Ducks were also among the animals found on site.
The City of Athens’ urban wildlife unit coordinated the removal operation. Poultry were transferred to the National Garden, while the remaining animals were relocated to municipal facilities for care and veterinary checks.
Officials confirmed that all animals will undergo health screenings to assess possible diseases.
Police have filed charges against the alleged owner of the illegal setup, as well as against a property management company, for violations of Greece’s animal protection laws.
The case file will be forwarded to the public prosecutor for further legal action.
Authorities are also examining potential building code violations linked to the unauthorized construction on the rooftop.
