Infant Falls from Balcony in Chania

The child’s mother was briefly detained by police on charges of endangering a minor but was released shortly after to accompany her child to the hospital in Heraklion

A tragic accident occurred in Chania, Crete, where an infant fell from a balcony and is currently in critical condition, intubated in the pediatric intensive care unit.

The incident took place on the evening of August 7 in the Gerani area of the Platanias municipality. According to reports, the child, approximately one and a half years old, slipped from the view of his 17-year-old mother and fell from the balcony under circumstances that remain unclear.

Emergency services rushed the infant to Chania General Hospital in a comatose state. The hospital’s neurologists and pediatric surgeons conducted examinations, including a CT scan, after which doctors decided to transfer the child to the Pediatric Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) for advanced care.

At PAGNI, the infant remains in serious condition in the pediatric ICU, suffering from multiple injuries to the head and body, according to Deputy Director Stelios Kteniadakis.
