Inmate in Greece Accused of Extorting €300,000 from Cell

Police in Katerini uncovered a case where a 50-year-old prisoner allegedly extorted €300,000 from a man by phone, linking the threats to grenade and Molotov attacks on relatives’ homes earlier this year

Police in the northern Greek city of Katerini have solved an extortion case dating back to January 2025. According to investigators, a 50-year-old Albanian national imprisoned in Greece allegedly demanded €300,000 from a 46-year-old man, claiming the money was owed to a third person, a 42-year-old whose identity has also been confirmed.

Authorities say the inmate was the mastermind behind two violent incidents connected to the case. On 23 January 2025, a defensive-type grenade was placed at a relative’s home in Pieria. Days later, on 1 February 2025, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at another relative’s house in Attica.

Investigators discovered that the prisoner had obtained a mobile phone through a 40-year-old fellow inmate, enabling him to carry out the telephone extortion. Police have now identified all parties involved, and the case file will be submitted to the Prosecutor of the Court of First Instance in Katerini.
