Authorities in Greece have declared a state of emergency in several municipalities following a strong earthquake that struck the wider region early on Sunday, March 8.
The municipalities of Ioannina and Dodoni in the regional unit of Ioannina, as well as the municipal unit of Paramythia in the municipality of Souli in the regional unit of Thesprotia, were placed under emergency status.
The decision was taken by the Secretary General for Civil Protection, Nikos Papaefstathiou.
According to the decision, the areas are being placed under a state of Civil Protection Emergency in order to address urgent needs and manage the consequences caused by the strong earthquake that struck on March 8, 2026.
An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck the regional unit of Thesprotia in northwestern Greece early Sunday, shaking communities across the wider Epirus region.
According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the quake occurred at 5:32 a.m. with an epicenter located 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) east of the village of Leptokarya in Thesprotia. The focal depth was measured at 12.9 kilometers (about 8 miles).
