Police on the Greek island of Karpathos arrested a 34-year-old foreign national accused of stealing from a hotel room who was also found to be wanted as a prison fugitive.
According to the Hellenic Police, the man entered a hotel room through an unlocked balcony door on the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 11, taking advantage of the guests’ absence. He stole valuables, a laptop and cash.
Police launched an investigation after the theft was reported. In the early hours of Wednesday, Aug. 12, officers located the suspect aboard a scheduled ferry shortly before it was due to leave the island.
During his detention, the man had no travel documents and provided false identification details. After police established his true identity, they discovered that he had failed to return to a correctional facility after being granted leave and was wanted as a fugitive.
The stolen property and cash were recovered, seized and identified by their owners.
The 34-year-old faces charges of theft, making a false statement and escaping custody. He is due to be brought before the Prosecutor’s Office for Misdemeanors in Rhodes.
