The world’s largest Greek flag was again hoisted in the port of Irakleio (Herakleio) Crete on Tuesday, on the occasion of the annual OXI Day celebrations throughout the country commemorating Greece’s entry into World War II.
The 1,440-square-meter flag, 32 meters by 45 meters, is annually raised via a crane on Oct. 28, an initiative of the local Kalathakis family, and is visible in several parts of Crete’s largest city.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Iasmi Kalathaki emphasized that “this is a way to honor those who lost their lives for the country and to remind everyone that we must not forget their sacrifice and values.”
