Drivers in Athens faced major disruptions on Thursday morning after a serious traffic accident brought Kifisos Avenue, one of the capital’s busiest highways, to a standstill. The incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m., adding to the already difficult conditions caused by heavy rainfall.
The crash happened near the Kalyftaki interchange when a car collided with a truck, causing the truck to overturn. The impact scattered cargo across the roadway, blocking all three lanes and forcing vehicles to squeeze through a single available lane.
Crews from the Attica regional authority were deployed to remove the spilled materials, which included soil and other cargo that had spread across the highway. The cleanup effort significantly slowed traffic, resulting in long queues and delays stretching for kilometres.
According to initial information, the two people injured in the accident were occupants of the car involved. Their injuries were reported as minor.
Authorities urged drivers to expect continued congestion in the area until the roadway was fully cleared.
