Massive Rockfall in Lesbos Damages Road

Heavy rains caused a 50-ton boulder to fall, creating a 1.5-meter crater and damaging protective structures, as crews work to restore the road in southern Lesbos

Severe weather in southern Lesbos has caused serious disruptions to the road network, with the Plomari–Melinta road experiencing the most dramatic incident. A huge rock, estimated at 50 tons, detached from the mountain and crashed onto the road, destroying part of the pavement and making it impassable.

Authorities from the North Aegean Region deployed heavy machinery early in the morning to remove the boulder and repair the affected section. The rockfall also displaced a nearby protective wall, further complicating the restoration effort.

According to Konstantinos Moutzouris, the regional governor, the Plomari–Melinta road is prone to rockfalls, particularly after heavy rains or seismic activity. He emphasized that the recent event represents the largest rockfall ever recorded along this stretch in terms of volume.

“The North Aegean Region has prepared a protection plan for the road, including safety structures at multiple points. We will act immediately to address today’s incident,” Moutzouris said.

The collapse has raised safety concerns for locals and travelers alike, and the road is expected to remain closed until crews complete the removal and repairs. Residents are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while emergency works continue.
