Migrant Boat of 25 Spotted Off Gavdos, South of Crete

This is the second incident in a week, after Greek authorities rescued 34 irregular migrants who were aboard a boat.

Another boat carrying twenty-five irregular migrants was spotted on Friday afternoon, just one nautical mile off the coast of Gavdos, located south of Crete. The small dinghy boat was sailing near Trypiti Beach when it was detected by a Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boat.

This is the second incident in a week, after Greek authorities rescued 34 irregular migrants who were aboard a boat in the southwestern sea area off Europe’s southernmost region.

The migrants were safely transferred to the Karave port of Gavdos in an operation coordinated by the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center of the Hellenic Coast Guard.

Later in the day, the 25 migrants are expected to be transported by ship to Crete and then to the Agyia facility, where 160 people are already being hosted following previous arrivals in recent days.

According to reports, the Agyia center has been accommodating migrants daily for the past six months, and the constant transfers and supervision duties have increasingly strained the Coast Guard personnel.

Last week, a FRONTEX vessel, with the assistance of a drone and under the coordination of the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center, located and rescued 34 migrants who were aboard a boat in the southwestern sea area of Gavdos.
