Two mountain climbers reported missing on Mount Olympus in Greece, earlier this week, were found safe on Tuesday, authorities said.
The two men, aged 28 and 29, had been reported missing on the eastern side of Mount Olympus above the town of Litochoro.
According to the latest reports, the climbers contacted authorities and said they were making their way down the mountain. They provided their location approximately 5km (3.1 miles) from the Golna area and told officials they had never been in danger.
The two men had set out on a hike on Monday at around noon. Approximately two hours later, they posted on social media that they were in the “Golna” position.
Concern grew after the mother of one of the climbers alerted authorities saying she had been unable to contact her son.
The Fire Service, the Greek National Rescue Service (EMAK), and the Greek Police launched a rescue operation shortly afterwards.
Litochoro, located at the base of Mount Olympus, is considered the main starting point for climbers and hikers attempting routes on Greece’s highest mountain. Every year, more than 10,000 people visit the mountain with several accidents reported.
