According to the island's mayor, a five-member committee of state officials will convene in the city Patras in the coming period to decide on whether the dog will be put down or remain in a shelter; a 2-year-old child was mauled to death

The shock of yesterday’s news that a pit bull attacked and fatally mauled a local toddler continues a day later on the Ionian Sea Island of Zakynthos.

More details emerged on Sunday, with the latest information holding that the dog was not a family pet, per se, but one of several strays picked up and cared for by the unfortunate two-year-old Leo’s parents.

Several photographs emerged a day later showing the young victim playing with other dogs.

A local prosecutor ordered the removal of the pit bull to a shelter, where it will be under observation by a veterinarian.

According to local authorities, the Leo’s family had cared for several strays, numbering around 20, at the one-storey rural residence at the Aghios Leontas settlement.

According to Zakynthos Mayor Giorgos Stasinopoulos, a five-member committee of state officials will convene in the city Patras in the coming period to decide on whether the dog will be put down or remain in a shelter.
