Deadly Village Feud in Crete Deepens After Shootings

A violent feud in southern Crete, where gunfire between families was exchanged, has left several people dead and many injured. Police have launched a large-scale operation to restore order

What began as a tragic family incident in Heraklion has escalated into a wider wave of violence across Crete. Within hours of the discovery of two bodies in a Heraklion home, a bloody vendetta erupted in the nearby village of Vorizia, leaving several people dead and at least 15 others injured, according to breaking reports from today.

Mother and son found dead in Heraklion blaze

The first tragedy unfolded on Friday night in the Mastambas district of Heraklion, where an elderly woman and her bedridden son were found dead inside their apartment. A second son, rescued by firefighters, remains in critical condition after jumping from a rooftop to escape the flames.

The fire broke out around 8:30 p.m., prompting an immediate emergency response. Both victims reportedly suffered from severe mobility problems.

However, investigators were alarmed to discover one of the victims with a plastic bag over their head and evidence of two separate fire sources, raising suspicions of foul play.

At the scene, police collected a blood-stained knife near the doorway and a plastic bag with traces of blood from the rooftop—the same spot from which the surviving son jumped. Authorities are now treating the case as a potential homicide.

Deadly vendetta rocks southern Crete

Just hours later, Crete was shaken again — this time by a violent armed feud in the mountain village of Vorizia, south of Heraklion.

According to local reports, gunfire broke out early Saturday morning following a bomb attack on a house under construction the previous night. The exchange of shots between two rival families has reportedly resulted in multiple deaths and dozens of injuries, with the Greek police (ELAS) launching a large-scale emergency operation in the area.

Witnesses described the situation as resembling a “war zone”, with authorities blocking access to the village due to ongoing gunfire. Ambulances have transported the wounded to hospitals in Heraklion and to nearby health centers in Moires and Agia Varvara.

Police have not yet released official figures or identities of the victims, as the situation remains fluid and highly dangerous.
