Authorities in Athens were placed on high alert after a 48-year-old Sudanese man appeared outside the city’s main police headquarters on Alexandras Avenue, threatening to detonate two live grenades. The incident drew immediate police attention due to the location’s high public traffic and potential risk.
Photos released show the grenades, described as defensive-type, fully functional and secured with tape. According to police, the man was recently released from Korydallos Prison, just three days before the alarming appearance.
When questioned, the 48-year-old claimed he found the grenades hidden inside a plastic container in a park near the Acropolis, and that he brought them with him. Authorities are investigating the credibility of this statement and the origin of the explosives.
The man is well known to Greek authorities. Since 2008, he has been involved in repeated criminal cases including drug offenses, theft, aiding criminals, and violations of weapons laws. Despite his recent release, he appeared armed outside one of the country’s most heavily guarded buildings, creating widespread concern among law enforcement.
