Glimmers of the “Louvre Heist” played out at the Delphi archaeological site on Friday when two Polish nationals, 42 and 31, first entered the premises by jumping over a fence and then allegedly taking a stone from the antiquities.
Guards at the site first informed authorities that the two men has entered the site without purchasing a ticket, while one of the two then refused to open his rucksack for an inspection during their exit from the main entrance. When the stone was detected in the bag, however, both men fled and drove off in leased car from parked outside.
They were later stopped by police on a provincial road leading away from Delphi.
Charges of grand larceny and violation of the law on antiquities protection were filed against, although the object was not found on their possession.
