A 70-year-old woman drove nearly one kilometer against traffic on the Olympia Odos motorway before colliding head-on with another car, leaving two people dead and one seriously injured

A fatal accident on Greece’s Olympia Odos motorway claimed two lives on Thursday evening near Patras, after a 70-year-old driver traveled for about one kilometer in the wrong direction.

The crash occurred at the Panagopoula tunnels, when the woman’s car struck another vehicle carrying two men from Megara. Firefighters freed the trapped passengers, but one of the men later died in hospital. The woman’s own car burst into flames, leaving her fatally burned inside.

According to local reports, the woman had entered the motorway at the Selianitika junction, heading toward Patras. Upon reaching the tunnels, she mistakenly turned into a lane designated for trucks carrying hazardous materials, attempted a U-turn, and began driving toward Aigio against oncoming traffic.

Eyewitnesses said several drivers tried to warn her with horns and headlights, but she did not realize her mistake before the deadly head-on collision.
