Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis received the Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, Archbishop Makarios, in Athens on Friday.
Before the meeting, reportedly held in a very warm atmosphere at the Maximos Mansion, Mitsotakis expressed his joy and announced he would be visiting Australia on the occasion of the Greek national OHI Day celebration on March 25th.
The Greek PM expressed hope that legislation, allowing expats to cast postal votes in the upcoming Greek national elections, would pass overwhelmingly in parliament, calling it a historic moment for the diaspora.
Mitsotakis said he was personally involved in completing and announcing a double taxation agreement with the Australian authorities. If an agreement were reached, it would exempt entrepreneurs doing business in both countries from paying double tax.
On his part, Archbishop Makarios pointed out that the Greek community was waiting anxiously for his visit, as it was not merely ceremonial but substantive.
He acknowledged the efforts being made on behalf of the Greek community in Australia, addressing Kyriakos Mitsotakis as the “Prime Minister of the diaspora” and emphasizing that his work is deeply appreciated by Hellenism across the region.
