Police in northern Greece on Monday announced 10 arrests and warrants for another two suspects in an investigation targeting the systematic cross-border smuggling of alcohol and illegal pesticides using tourist coaches.
Authorities said the smuggling ring used special crypts build into the buses to smuggling the contraband into the country without customs control, reportedly from Ukraine.
Arrests were made in Thessaloniki, Athens and on the island of Skiathos. One of the individuals arrested was identified by police as the ringleader.
The annual loss in tax revenue was calculated at 150,000 euros.
Some of the suspects arrested are charged with finding buyers for the pesticides, many of whom were bootleg versions of known brands, and untaxed liquor.
