Greek authorities on Wednesday announced six arrests of individuals located in what’s being described as a “call center” for phone scams, a major scourge in the country usually targeting elderly people with various ruses in order to relieve them of cash and other valuables.
The raid was conducted by members of a police organized crimes unit at residences in the gritty northwest Athens district of Zephyri.
The suspects are accused of calling dozens and possibly hundreds of potential victims across Greece on a daily basis.
The six individuals, all of whom were arrested while allegedly engaged in the scam operation, were identified as members of the local Roma (gypsy) community.
So far, at least 30 cases of fraud have been identified, with officers estimating that since October 2025 there have been additional cases of wrongdoing.
Hundreds of thousands of euros in loot
The financial gain obtained by the alleged gang members of the specific criminal exceeds a whopping 300,000 euros.
Notably, in one swindled netted the gang 50,000 euros from a victim in the upscale Kifissia township.
