Greek Police (EL.AS) on Monday released figures of a months-long operation (Ariadne) targeting criminality in mass transit facilities in the greater Athens-Piraeus areas, including on buses, trams and metro cars.
According to the eight-month figures, more than 96,000 checks by police patrols in stations and on buses and carriages yielded more than 1,500 arrests on charges ranging from theft, robbery, vandalism and weapons possession to illegal residency in the country.
Stepped up patrols were expanded to include the suburban rail line (Proastiakos).
A relevant announcement by authorities claimed that criminal incidents dropped by 60% during the first eight-month period of the year, compared to the corresponding period of 2024, while the particularly problematic incidents of rocks being thrown at buses and metro carriage dropped by 80%, along with decreased rates of fare evasion.
