Nearly a year after the drowning of an 8-year-old girl in a camp swimming pool in northern Greece, the case is now under review by the Prosecutor’s Office in Polygyros. Authorities are determining whether criminal charges — likely negligent homicide — will be brought.
The fatal incident occurred on August 13, 2024, at a children’s summer camp in the Halkidiki region. A preliminary investigation was launched shortly after the girl’s death, ordered by a local prosecutor. As part of that inquiry, an expert inspection was carried out on the pool facilities, focusing on safety protocols and supervision measures in place at the time.
Five individuals were called to provide explanations during the investigation. The autopsy concluded earlier this year confirmed drowning as the cause of death.
The child had been at the camp with her older sister and was last seen shortly after lunch, during rest time. Her absence was noticed when she failed to return, prompting a search. She was found unconscious in the pool and later pronounced dead at Thessaloniki’s AHEPA Hospital despite resuscitation efforts.
The case file now awaits assignment to a prosecutor who will decide whether the evidence supports criminal proceedings.
