The mild weather that has graced much of Greece is coming to an end, with rain expected to reach Athens and other regions this weekend. Meteorologists predict a shift as the current high-pressure system weakens, giving way to storm systems from the west and northwest.
According to meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis, mild conditions will persist through Friday, with cooler nights and mornings. However, the first significant weather disturbance of the season is expected to arrive Saturday, with two more anticipated before Christmas. Coastal and island areas will be the first affected.
From Saturday afternoon, rain is expected in Thessaly, Magnesia, and the Sporades islands, with heavier rainfall likely from Lamia southward. The central and southern Ionian Sea, Peloponnese, Cyclades, Crete, the eastern Aegean, Dodecanese islands, Attica, Boeotia, and Evia will also see precipitation.
In Athens, Saturday will remain relatively mild, but rain is expected primarily on Sunday. No severe or dangerous weather is anticipated at this stage. Temperatures will reach around 16°C (61°F), lower than the recent days of unseasonably warm weather.
The rainy and cloudy conditions are expected to continue through the following days. Mountainous regions will experience a more noticeable drop in temperature, while lower-lying areas will remain milder.
Looking ahead to the holidays, new weather systems will bring further rain and snow, even at lower elevations. Christmas Day is forecasted to feature widespread rain and snow in high-altitude areas, with temperatures dropping further as New Year’s approaches, increasing the chance of snow in lower-lying regions.
For Wednesday, mostly mild weather is expected nationwide. Some clouds will appear in southern Ionian islands, the Peloponnese, Sporades, western Crete, and parts of Thrace.
In Athens, skies will be partly cloudy with sunny intervals, and temperatures between 7°C and 18°C (45–64°F). Thessaloniki will see similar conditions, with temperatures from 4°C to 14°C (39–57°F). Thursday and Friday are expected to be mostly dry with occasional cloud cover and sunny spells.
