Recycling Plant in Athens Catches Fire- Cause Unkown

The fire broke out on Saturday, but was quickly brought under control by the local fire brigade

A fire broke out on Saturday morning, August 16, at a recycling plant in the Athens’ municipality of Aigaleo.

The blaze started at around 07:50 under circumstances that remain unclear. So far, there is no risk of the fire spreading, according to the fire service.

Traffic halted on Thessalias Street

To extinguish the fire, 25 firefighters with 11 fire engines have been mobilized, assisted by heavy machinery from the local municipality. The fire is burning scrap material.

The Hellenic Police announced at 08:30 that, due to the fire, traffic has been suspended on Thessalias Street from its junction with Emmanouil Pappas Street in the Votanikos area.

Three other notable fires have occured at recycling plants in Greece since the start of July. The fire at a plant on the island of Lesvos blanked the island with thick toxic smoke, causing alarm over public health risks.
