Residents Report Naphthalene-Like Smell in Athens Tap Water

Residents in several southern suburbs of Athens have complained of unusual odors in tap water, described as naphthalene or chlorine-like. Authorities say the issue is temporary and does not affect water quality

Dozens of residents in the southern suburbs of Athens have reported unusual odors in their tap water, sparking concern and online warnings. The affected areas include Ano Nea Smyrni, Agios Dimitrios, Dafni, Neo Kosmo, and Palaio Faliro.

Many consumers described the water as smelling of chlorine or naphthalene, with some noting a lingering odor on their hands. On social media, some advised using tap water only for washing dishes and cleaning, not for drinking.

The Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP) quickly responded, attributing the unusual smell to “emergency measures following a fault in the water network.” The company confirmed that the odor variation is temporary and emphasized that water quality remains safe for consumption.

“EYDAP ensures daily that citizens can enjoy water safely, addressing any emergency incidents efficiently and promptly,” the company said in an official statement.
