Rhodes boosts firefighting capacity with Bell 214ST helicopter

The Greek island has added a new aerial firefighting asset ahead of the fire season, strengthening its emergency response alongside existing aircraft.

Rhodes has strengthened its aerial firefighting capabilities with the arrival and operational deployment of a Bell 214ST helicopter, which has been installed at the island’s base and has already begun missions.

The development was announced by Christos Efstratiou, Deputy Regional Governor of the Dodecanese, who said the helicopter significantly enhances civil protection planning ahead of the upcoming fire season.

According to Efstratiou, the Bell 214ST will operate alongside three Air Tractor aircraft that are already active daily on Rhodes. The combined operation of the aircraft and helicopter is expected to improve the island’s ability to fight wildfires from the air and transport personnel when needed.

The presence of these aerial firefighting resources is considered important for protecting Rhodes during the summer months, as the island is among the areas considered at high risk for forest fires.
