A woman in Chania, Crete, was bitten by a sea turtle while swimming in the shallow waters of Marathi beach, a location popular with families and young children.
The swimmer, who was unaware of the turtle’s presence, felt it bite the side of her abdomen without warning. Fortunately, the bite was mild, leaving only redness at the site and no serious injury.

Speaking to local media, the woman emphasized the need for authorities to ensure the safety of both marine wildlife and beachgoers to prevent similar incidents in the future. She expressed particular concern given the large number of families with small children who frequent the area.

While sea turtles are generally not aggressive toward humans, interactions can occasionally occur, especially in shallow waters where both swimmers and marine life may cross paths. Experts recommend giving wildlife plenty of space and avoiding sudden movements to minimize risks.
