A multi-prong wildfire in a rugged region of the northeast Peloponnese raged for a third straight day on Thursday, rekindling at least twice despite a massive fire-fighting effort at the scene.
The blaze, in the Feneos municipality of Corinth prefecture (west of Athens proper), has destroyed forestland, crops and some residences.
The specific site where the wildfire erupted is described as remote, rugged and mountainous.
Two arrests were made in relation to the blaze, with two men facing felony arson charges for allegedly causing the initial fire due to welding in the forested area.
The fire brigade said 360 fire-fighters, along with volunteers, were operating at the site, assisted after dawn by 20 water-dropping planes and helicopters.
Three villages were ordered evacuated at midnight when the wildfire rekindled during the night.
Two fire-fighters were also injured on Wednesday, one with burns and the other due to smoke inhalation.
At least 10 regions around the east Mediterranean country have been designated as being in a very high risk for wildfires on Friday, including the outlying parts of Attica prefecture, which hosts the greater Athens-Piraeus agglomeration.
Wildfire on Greece-Albania Frontier
Meanwhile, civil defense authorities on Thursday ordered the evacuation of a village and settlement, Ktismata and Neochori, respectively, near the Greek-Albanian border, as a wildfire straddling the frontier threatened them.
The wildfire reportedly erupted near the Kakavia border post, with strong northwesterly winds pushing the wide front of flames and smoke into Greek territory.
