Coastal Suburb Declares State of Emergency after Deadly Storm

Flash flooding caused by hours of intense rainfall has devastated parts of southern Athens, damaging roads, vehicles, and homes, as emergency crews work to restore access in one of the hardest-hit municipalities

A state of emergency has been declared in the municipality of Vari–Voula–Vouliagmeni, in southern Athens, after a powerful storm system caused widespread destruction, with the area of Vari suffering the most severe impact.

Aerial footage released by Orange Press Agency shows entire neighborhoods engulfed in thick mud, highlighting the scale of the damage left behind by the extreme weather. For several hours, torrential rain battered the region, overwhelming natural waterways and turning streets into fast-flowing torrents.

The intensity of the storm caused streams to overflow, sending water, mud, rocks, and debris rushing through residential areas. Large sections of the road network were severely damaged, with one major local road cut off at multiple points. In some areas, the asphalt collapsed entirely, creating deep cracks and making passage dangerous or impossible.

Vehicles were among the hardest hit. Many cars were swept away by floodwaters and buried under layers of mud and debris, while others were left stranded in ditches or pinned against electricity poles. Images from the scene show rows of damaged vehicles partially or fully submerged.

Homes also suffered extensive damage, as muddy floodwaters poured into courtyards and ground-level properties. One striking image shows a private swimming pool completely filled with mud, underscoring the force and volume of the runoff.

Emergency response teams from the fire service, along with heavy machinery operated by municipal authorities, have been deployed to the affected areas. Their priority is to clear debris, restore access to isolated streets, and stabilize damaged infrastructure following what officials have described as a natural disaster of exceptional intensity.
