Severe weather has swept across Greece, triggering floods, road closures and extensive damage in both mainland and island regions, as authorities remain on high alert for further extreme conditions.
From the early hours of Sunday, coastal areas of central Greece were among the hardest hit. Drone footage from affected regions showed roads submerged under seawater, with storm-driven waves breaking over coastal highways and blurring the line between land and sea. Torrential rain, overflowing streams and strong winds combined to inundate residential areas, forcing emergency crews into continuous response mode.
Homes and Farmland Underwater
In several coastal and low-lying areas, floodwaters carried mud, debris and tree branches into streets, ground-floor homes and businesses, causing significant material damage. Emergency vehicles worked through thick mud to reopen blocked roads, while police marked dangerous points and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
Beyond urban areas, the impact extended to agriculture. Large stretches of farmland were transformed into temporary lakes, raising concerns over crop losses in regions already vulnerable to extreme weather.
Islands Hit by Flash Floods
On popular island destinations, intense rainfall turned roads into torrents within minutes. Floodwaters swept through central streets, carrying rubbish bins and debris and making movement difficult for residents and visitors alike.

In the northern Aegean, continued rainfall led to water entering homes in residential neighborhoods. Fire service crews were deployed to assist residents and pump out flooded properties as conditions deteriorated.
Transport Disruptions and Snowfall
In northern Greece, severe rain and snowfall caused multiple disruptions to the road network. Vehicle traffic was suspended at several crossings due to flooding, while snow accumulation in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas made the use of snow chains mandatory on key routes.
Emergency alerts were sent to residents in multiple regions via the national warning system, advising caution and limiting travel due to hazardous conditions.
Red Weather Warnings Issued
The national meteorological service has issued updated red warnings for intense and prolonged rainfall and thunderstorms across large parts of the country. Forecasts also warn of gale-force winds, reaching up to 8–9 on the Beaufort scale, and the possibility of local hailstorms.
Heavy snowfall is expected in mountainous areas, with snow also forecast at lower elevations in parts of northern Greece. The most severe conditions are expected to affect central and northern regions, as well as eastern island areas, with some weather phenomena continuing into Monday.
