A powerful wave of bad weather is battering Western Greece with heavy rainfall and strong winds, while forecasters warn that the storm system will spread to much of the country today, October 2, and tomorrow, October 3.
On Zakynthos, schools remain closed as a precaution, while the General Secretariat for Civil Protection urges citizens to take self-protection measures against risks posed by the extreme conditions.
Tourists Rescued in Corfu
On the northern tip of Corfu, British tourists found themselves trapped when their car became stuck on a muddy dirt road. Firefighters rushed to the scene, safely transferring the couple and their child back to the main road in Peroulades.
Emergency Alerts and Rising Floods
Text alerts via the 112 system were sent to residents of the Ionian Islands, Achaia, Ilia and Messinia, warning them of the dangerous weather.

In Volos, the School of Agricultural Sciences was flooded despite recent insulation works. Students reported to state broadcaster ERT that water entered corridors and laboratories, damaging equipment and destroying ongoing experiments—causing what they described as “incalculable damage” to research and coursework.

Authorities on High Alert
The Risk Assessment Committee, convened by Civil Protection Secretary General met on Wednesday to evaluate the unfolding situation. Scientists warned that the weather would be particularly severe in Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Achaia, Ilia, Messinia, Laconia and Central Macedonia today, before shifting east on Friday, affecting Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the islands of the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese.
The committee is expected to reconvene today to reassess conditions as the storm advances eastward.

According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), the forecast for Thursday includes:
• Ionian Islands: Heavy rain until early afternoon.
• Epirus, Western Macedonia, Western Sterea, Western & Southern Peloponnese: Severe storms from early morning until afternoon.
• Central Macedonia: Heavy rain from late morning.
• Thessaly: Intense rainfall from midday through the evening.
• Central & Eastern Sterea (including Attica), the rest of the Peloponnese, Western Crete, Evia, Sporades: Strong showers from midday through the evening.
• Eastern Aegean Islands & Eastern Macedonia: Storms from late evening.
• Thrace: Severe weather late at night.
