Greece is enjoying a spell of warm, calm weather this week, but meteorologists are warning that conditions could change dramatically by the weekend.
According to forecasts, the stable weather pattern currently in place is expected to give way to rain and storms, with experts warning that some of these phenomena could be severe. The change is linked to what meteorologists describe as a “Rex Block” — an interaction between cooler air descending from northern Europe and warm seas in the south. This combination creates an unstable atmosphere that can fuel extreme weather.
Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis sounded the alarm, noting that the risk of dangerous conditions is rising:
“From one side, colder air from northern Europe is being pushed toward a low-pressure system, while on the other, that low interacts with warm waters. The result is an explosively unstable atmosphere, which may also affect our country. We must be prepared for potentially dangerous situations.”
His colleague, Thodoris Kolydas, added that while the long-awaited autumn rains are on the way, they may not benefit the whole country evenly, with eastern Greece expected to see more activity than other regions.
Meanwhile, meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafilias forecast that the current high-pressure system will begin to weaken over the weekend, opening the way for rain systems to move in. Until then, skies will remain mostly sunny, winds will ease, and in some lowland areas temperatures may climb above 30°C.
Forecasters emphasize that more precise details about the timing, intensity, and affected regions will become clear in the coming days.
