Ships Docked as 24-Hour Strike Paralyzes Piraeus Port

Workers are demanding the renewal of collective labor agreements with wage increases, improved health and safety measures on board ships, and stricter inspections.

Ships remained docked at the port of Piraeus from the morning of Friday, Feb. 6, as workers joined a 24-hour citywide strike affecting all categories of vessels.

According to union announcements, ferry services to Salamina and Elefsina have also been disrupted, while routes departing from Rafina continue to operate normally.

Workers are demanding the renewal of collective labor agreements with wage increases, improved health and safety measures on board ships, and stricter inspections. At the same time, unions have placed anti-war demands at the center of the mobilization, calling for Greece not to be involved in military operations and for the country’s ports not to be used for transporting war cargo.

The Labor Centers of Piraeus and Elefsina, along with the port workers’ unions and other labor organizations and local bodies, have called for a 24-hour strike and rallies this morning in both Piraeus and Elefsina.

The Piraeus Labor Center called a 10:30 a.m. rally at Municipal Theater Square as part of the International Dockworkers Coordination’s global day of action under the slogan “Dockworkers will not work for war,” with participation from unions including ENEDEP and dockworkers from several countries.

At the same time, the Elefsina Labor Center staged a gathering in Heroes Square as part of a 24-hour strike across the Thriasio Plain, highlighting key labor and community concerns.

The Attica Metalworkers and Shipbuilding Industry Union also joined the mobilization, demanding sector-wide collective labor agreements with wage increases, shorter working hours, and recognition of the industry as hazardous work.
