A 26-year-old motorcyclist was arrested in the early hours of the morning after being caught speeding at 187 kilometers per hour (116 mph) on a major highway in Athens, according to Greek police.
The incident took place on the Athens–Lamia National Road, one of the country’s busiest highways, near the suburb of Kifisia in northern Athens. Authorities said the rider was detected by radar traveling at a speed far exceeding the legal limit of 100 km/h (62 mph).
During a subsequent traffic stop, officers discovered that the motorcyclist should not have been driving at all. His license had been suspended just days earlier for a period of 30 days, making his presence on the road a violation in itself.
Police proceeded to arrest the driver on charges of dangerous driving and operating a vehicle without a valid license. In addition to the criminal charges, administrative penalties were also imposed.
The case has now been referred to the public prosecutor, who will determine the next legal steps.
Greek authorities have repeatedly warned about the dangers of excessive speeding, particularly on major roadways where high traffic volumes increase the risk of serious accidents.
