Strong 5.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Zakynthos

The late-night quake was felt across western Greece, with no injuries or damage reported, as experts continue to monitor seismic activity in the area.

A strong 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Greek island of Zakynthos early Tuesday, according to Greece’s National Observatory of Athens. The quake occurred at 1:41 a.m. local time in the Ionian Sea, roughly 89 kilometers (55 miles) west-southwest of the village of Agios Leon and about 345 kilometers (214 miles) west of Athens.

The tremor was felt across parts of western Greece, including the cities of Patras and Pyrgos, prompting concern among residents. Authorities reported no injuries or material damage following the quake. Seismologists estimated the earthquake’s focal depth at approximately 8.5 kilometers (5.3 miles).

About an hour later, at 2:50 a.m., a smaller aftershock measuring 3.3 magnitude was recorded in the same offshore area, around 75 kilometers (47 miles) west-southwest of Agios Leon. The aftershock had a shallower focal depth of about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles).

Seismologists are closely monitoring the situation but have said there is no cause for immediate concern. No further significant seismic activity has been reported so far.
